2nd Annual Chess and Science Festival took place on Saturday, April 19th at Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium in Tucson, AZ.
The event attracted 27 girls – some as young as 5 y.o., who competed in the All-Girls Tournament and participated in the numerous science activities.Their parents, siblings and hundreds of visitors came to participate in the Festival, cheer for the girls and support the cause. Mayor of Tucson, Jonathan Rothschild, came to address the girls and encourage their envolvement in chess, science and other intellectual areas. PBS / Arizona Public Media was videotaping large part of the event.
Overall, Chess & Science Festival had overwhelmingly positive feedback and many parents expressed sincere gratitude to the organizers for the high quality outstanding event:
“Dear Anjelina, I would like to thank you and the sponsors for organizing such a great event. My daughter is delighted with her pink trophy! I think this is a turning point in her chess playing. Her confidence has gone up, and she is really looking forward now to playing at Nationals in May. I and the boys also had a great time exploring the exhibits and watching the shows. I hope this becomes a Tucson tradition…”
“Super event!”
“… Thank you so much for hosting this wonderful event…”
and more.
PBS / Arizona Public Media has aired the story about the event on Tuesday, May 27th:

We would like to express our sincere THANK YOU to all who supported the event, either by volunteering their time or by providing financial means to run it.
We are looking forward to organizing 3rd Annual Chess & Science Festival in 2015, but hope to get additional support from the parents and sponsors, as many Flandrau employees, University of Arizona PhD students, and other organizers put a lot of time and effort to make this event a success, with the hope of long lasting positive effect it will have on girls active participation in the areas of math, science, business and chess.
